Contemporary Stainless Solutions was engaged to design, fabricate, and install stainless steel handrails at Newcastle Ocean Baths, one of the region’s most recognisable coastal landmarks.

With constant exposure to saltwater, wind, and heavy public use, the project required a solution that would prioritise safety while holding up over time in a harsh marine environment.

The Brief

The goal was to improve safe access for swimmers entering and exiting the baths, while ensuring the installation could withstand coastal conditions without corrosion. It also needed to meet Australian safety standards and sit comfortably within the existing surrounds, without disrupting the character of the site.

Our Approach

Material selection was a key consideration from the outset. We used 316 marine-grade stainless steel, chosen specifically for its ability to resist corrosion in high-salt environments. This ensures the handrails maintain both their structural integrity and appearance over the long term.

Each section was custom fabricated to suit the unique conditions of the site. The existing steps, gradients, and entry points required a tailored approach to ensure a precise fit and a consistent, clean finish across all areas.

Installation was carried out with careful attention to compliance and usability. Heights, grip, and positioning were all considered to align with Australian Standards and to provide safe, practical access for a wide range of users.

Given the public nature of the location, works were coordinated to minimise disruption, allowing the baths to remain accessible throughout the installation period.

The Outcome

The completed handrails deliver a noticeable improvement in accessibility, making it easier and safer for visitors to move in and out of the water. The finish is clean and understated, sitting naturally within the coastal setting while still offering the strength required for a high-traffic environment.
