Commercial Glass Balustrades & Balconies

Frameless and semi-frameless glass balustrades give commercial balconies, atriums, stairwells and public spaces an uninterrupted line of sight without compromising safety. We install toughened and laminated safety glass to AS 1288, fixed with quality spigots and clamps.

For coastal and exposed sites we specify the grade to suit the environment – 316 stainless for its molybdenum content and corrosion resistance, and 2205 duplex, with 21–23% chromium, for the glass clamps and spigots that take the hardest hit from salt air.

Where there is a fall of a metre or more, we detail the top rail and fixings to keep the installation compliant and the sightlines clean.

How high does a commercial balustrade need to be?

Under the National Construction Code, a barrier is required wherever there is a fall of 1 metre or more. Balconies, landings and walkways generally require a minimum barrier height of 1000 mm above the floor, while stair handrails are typically a minimum of 865 mm above the stair nosings. We confirm the exact requirement against your building classification before fabrication.

What loads must a commercial balustrade withstand?

Balustrades and barriers are designed to the structural loading requirements of AS/NZS 1170. The design load depends on how the building is used – commercial and public areas carry higher loads than domestic ones, because of greater occupancy and crowd pressure. We engineer each balustrade to the classification of the building it is going into.

Which stainless steel grade is best for a commercial balustrade near the coast?

316 stainless steel contains molybdenum and a higher nickel content, which gives it strong resistance to salt and moisture – making it well suited to coastal sites around Newcastle and Port Stephens. 2205 duplex stainless has a higher chromium content again, at 21–23%, and outperforms 316. It is used predominantly in glass clamps and glass holding spigots, where corrosion resistance matters most.

Do commercial glass balustrades need a top rail?

Where there is a fall of 1 metre or more, a top rail is required to meet safety regulations. Glass must also be toughened or laminated safety glass installed in accordance with AS 1288. We detail the top rail, spigots and fixings as part of the design so the installation is compliant from the outset.
